Iran has begun mass-production of 125mm and 105mm shells for the Saqeb Anti-Armour System, Iranian Defence Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi has said.

The new ammunition is intended to bolster the Armed Forces’ capability in ground battles and to create a wide range of anti-armour ammunitions.

Fars News Agency quoted the minister as saying that the new ammunition can travel five times faster than the speed of sound, and is capable of penetrating into armour as thick as 50cm.

The minister also added: “the new shells can destroy all types of advanced, multiple-layer, new-generation reactionary armours”.

The Iranian Armed Forces have already been equipped with the new ammunition.

According to defence analysts, Iran’s advancements in weapons production have proved as a deterrent factor, especially during recent political upheaval.
