Leonardo DRS has completed both the delivery and final training for Improved Night/Day Observation Device Block III thermal weapon sights ordered by the Australian Army through the LAND 159 Tranche 1 programme.

The INOD Block III is a clip-on thermal sight for sniper and special operations users. It is fitted in front of a direct-view optic and is designed to retain the existing scope’s zero while adding thermal-imaging capability.

According to Leonardo DRS, the sight can be used with optical magnifications from 5x to more than 25x.

The company said it is intended to assist target detection, identification and engagement in darkness, smoke, haze, adverse weather and other conditions that restrict conventional optical systems.

The device uses a micro-cooled, 640-by-480 mid-wave infrared focal-plane array. Leonardo DRS said the sensor provides thermal imagery and target discrimination in degraded visual conditions.

In addition, the sight has lithium batteries that can be changed without stopping operation, while an external power option is available for longer static-surveillance activities.

Other features cited by the company include a rear-facing focus control, wired remote control and one-handed, glove-compatible operation.

The INOD sight is from the same generation of thermal systems fielded by US Army Special Operations Forces, according to the company, and it could support interoperability between Australian and US forces during joint and coalition operations.

Leonardo DRS also provided practical training to Australian Army personnel covering operation and maintenance of the systems.

Leonardo DRS electro-optical and infrared systems business unit senior vice president and general manager Jerry Hathaway said: “The INOD Block III provides a thermal sighting capability intended to support sniper operations in demanding conditions, and the training helps ensure personnel are prepared to operate and maintain the system.”

LAND 159 is a multi-phase Australian Defence Force programme covering sniper systems, small arms, support weapons and associated munitions.

Australian defence company NIOA is the prime contractor for the acquisition and managed local programme coordination and delivery logistics for the Army.
