L3 Harris Communications Systems has been awarded a new contract to provide a total of 1,300 modern multi-mode radios (MMR) for the UK Armed Forces.
Announced by the UK Government, the new contract has an estimated value of £90m.

Through this procurement, the UK Government aims to upgrade the land-based radio capabilities of the forces to further enhance their battlefield effectiveness.
The new radios will be fielded across the three services including the UK Royal Navy, Air Force, and Army. It will be operated by foot soldiers or by troops onboard different vehicles.
The associated work will sustain more than 200 employment opportunities across the UK supply chain, with the creation of nearly ten new jobs at L3 Harris’ headquarters in Farnborough, Hampshire, UK.
Delivery of the first tranche of MMRs is expected by the end of this year while the remaining will be delivered in 2023.

By GlobalDataUK Defence Procurement Minister Alex Chalk said: “It’s vital we equip our Armed Forces personnel with modern capabilities to maintain their operational effectiveness on an ever-changing battlefield.”
According to the British Government, the new radios are being acquired to enhance ground-to-ground, as well as ground-to-air, communications.
Equipped with technical advances and upgrades, the new MMRs can be used across various security classifications. The radios will gradually replace the conventional systems being used by British soldiers.
The improved communication provided by the new MMRs will further boost the capabilities of the Armed Forces to operate with allied and partner nations’ forces.
L3Harris Communication Systems UK vice-president and managing director Keith Norton said: “These will enable land forces to easily communicate and interoperate with Nato and US allies, as well as providing a solution that can be easily tailored for each deployment.”
