Bell Textron unveils rotorcraft for US Army’s FARA competition

Bell Textron released rotorcraft Bell 360 Invictus as its proposal for the US Army’s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) Competitive Prototype programme.

The company is one of the firms hoping to secure a contract to build prototypes for the FARA platforms.

Bell 360 Invictus will compete with designs proposed by other aspirants for the programme.


Microsoft secures $10bn Cloud-computing contract from US DoD

Microsoft beat Amazon in the $10bn competition to provide Cloud services to the US Department of Defense (DoD).

Pentagon has awarded the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) Cloud contract to Microsoft to migrate its computing infrastructure and data to the Cloud.

The indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract calls for the provision of enterprise-level commercial infrastructure as a service (IaaS) and platform as a service (PaaS) in support of DoD operations.

Raytheon receives $384m US Army LTAMDS radar contract

Raytheon secured a contract worth over $384m from the US Army to provide the next-generation Lower Tier Air and Missile Defense Sensor (LTAMDS).

The army has awarded an other transactional authority agreement to Raytheon to supply six ‘production representative units’ of the LTAMDS radar.

LTAMDS is an advanced air and missile defence radar that is intended to eventually replace the current radar of the US Army’s Patriot defence system.


Rheinmetall wins €300m armament contract from Hungary

Rheinmetall received a €300m contract to produce main armament and hulls for the Hungarian Army’s PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer and Leopard 2 main battle tank.

The contract is part of the Hungarian Army’s modernisation plans.

Under the contract, Rheinmetall will manufacture the main armament and fire control technology for 44 Leopard 2 tanks and 24 PzH 2000s. The company will also produce chassis for the howitzers.


BAE Systems to provide additional Bradley A4 IFV to US Army

BAE Systems received a contract modification from the US Army for the upgrade of an additional 168 upgraded Bradley A4 Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFV).

Valued at up to $269m, the contract will ensure the continued production of Bradley.

The company will deliver the contract modification in support of the US Army’s combat vehicle modernisation strategy.


Honeywell finalises updated T55 engine for US Army Chinook helicopters

Honeywell announced that it is finalising an updated version of the legacy T55 engine that powers the US Army’s Chinook heavy-lift helicopters.

The company has been developing the improved T55 engine that is proposed as a replacement for the legacy T55 engine, which has been in use on the Chinook for nearly 57 years.

The upgrade programme is undergoing optimisation and risk-reduction testing.


Marshall to use AT&T IoT Connectivity for Dutch container contract

Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group selected AT&T internet of things (IoT) Connectivity to deliver a connected container solution for the Dutch Army.

The company will incorporate AT&T’s IoT capabilities into its overall connected container service model to deliver the global managed container service contract.

In December last year, Marshall was awarded a contract to provide next-generation containers for the Dutch Armed Forces.


US DoD to partner with private firms to test 5G tech for military use

The US Department of Defense (DoD) is seeking private partners for a project to launch 5G prototypes at military sites.

Through the project, the DoD intends to incorporate commercial 5G technologies into military communications networks.

The department is planning to release a draft request for proposals (RFP) next month to invite private firms for large-scale experiments to test 5G technologies for military use.


US military withdrew 2,000 troops from Afghanistan over past year

The US military pulled out around 2,000 troops from Afghanistan over the last year as part of efforts to optimise its presence in the country.

At a news conference on 21 October, Resolute Support Mission commander general Austin Scott Miller stated that the US is constantly looking to optimise the force without affecting its training programme in Afghanistan.

The New York Times reported that the US has been reducing the number of troops stationed in Afghanistan without reaching a peace deal with the Taliban.


L3Harris delivers first advanced night vision systems to US Army

L3Harris Technologies delivered the first 40 combat-ready Enhanced Night Vision Goggle-Binocular (ENVG-B) systems to the US Army.

The company started initial deliveries as part of a $391m contract it received last year from the US Army.

The new systems are designed to provide improved situational awareness, mobility and protection to soldiers.
