The US State Department has approved a $325m potential foreign military sale of M1A2 Abrams main battle tank (MBT) system sustainment support along with associated equipment to Kuwait.
Kuwait is seeking to procure services and equipment related to the sustainment of both their existing M1A2 and the new M1A2K Abrams MBTs.
The package includes non-major defence equipment (MDE) items such as repair parts, spare parts, replacement materials, and additional elements essential for logistics and programme support.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress regarding this potential deal.
This possible sale is aligned with the foreign policy and national security objectives of the US. It aims to bolster the infrastructure of Kuwait, a significant non-Nato ally, contributing to political stability and economic advancement in the Middle East, the agency said.
DSCA said in a statement: “The proposed sale will improve Kuwait’s capability to meet current and future threats by assisting it in maintaining higher levels of operational readiness while meeting its modernization and professionalisation goals. Kuwait will have no difficulty absorbing these articles and services into its armed forces.”
General Dynamics Land Systems has been identified as the principal contractor for this sale.
In December 2024, the US State Department approved a sale to Kuwait that included military vehicle maintenance repair sustainment capability and associated equipment, valued at approximately $300m (Kd93m).
Furthermore, in 2022, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress about a sale involving M1A2K tank operational and training ammunition destined for Kuwait.
According to a GlobalData report, Kuwait’s defence expenditure in 2024 hit $6.1bn, with forecasts indicating an annual growth rate exceeding 3% from 2025 to 2029. This upward trend in spending is primarily attributed to the nation’s comprehensive military modernisation initiatives.
These initiatives are rooted in Kuwait’s commitment to maintaining its territorial integrity and combating terrorist threats.
