The Czech military will be equipped with a new type of assault rifle, CZ 805 BREN A1/A2 with a short barrel, which will be operational from autumn 2011.

The rifle has been manufactured by Ceska zbrojovka and will replace the Czechoslovak assault rifle 76.2mm vz 58, that has been in use for more than 50 years.

The new small weapons were designed as part of the “soldier of 21st century” project, which integrates all elements of personal equipment, gear, communication, navigation, optoelectronics and identification features of a soldier.

The modern CZ 805 BREN rifle represents a unified modular weapon system enabling accommodation of additional devices with the prospective of further improvements.

The cost of the contract is approximately CZK1.1bn ($62.1m).
