Lockheed Martin has announced the successful completion of a critical burst test on the Next Generation Interceptor’s (NGI) second-stage motor case.  

The test evaluated the structural resilience of the composite motor case under conditions exceeding those expected during launch.

According to a 4 August release from Lockheed Martin, this milestone brings the NGI programme closer to its Critical Design Review, which is planned for later this year. 

During the test, engineers filled the motor case with a carbon-fibre reinforced water vessel and inflated it until it surpassed anticipated launch pressures.  

The motor case was able to withstand the required induced loads before failing, which the company stated validated the component’s structural integrity and its suitability for the rigours of launch. 

Lockheed Martin NGI vice president Christopher Jewell said: “This successful burst test is a significant milestone on the path to CDR and brings us closer to fielding NGI by 2030.

“It proves our advanced motor architecture can withstand the harsh conditions of flight and still perform with the precision required to help protect the nation.” 

 The milestone keeps the NGI programme on course for key development and production targets, according to the company.  

Further preparations for deployment include the adoption of advanced digital design tools, which Lockheed Martin noted can accelerate system development and validation timelines.  

The company also cited substantial investment in manufacturing, with new facilities being established in Alabama to support anticipated production needs. 

Lockheed Martin was named prime contractor for the NGI programme by the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) in April 2024. 

The new interceptor is designed as a “tip-to-tail” interceptor for the MDA’s Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system. It aims to enhance the US’ missile defence capabilities against emerging long-range ballistic missile threats. 

In May, Lockheed Martin commenced construction of its new Munitions Production Centre in Troy, Alabama.  

While the facility will primarily assemble Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) interceptors, plans include future support for NGI production activities.
