The Group of Seven (G7) countries have agreed to supply more air defence systems to Ukraine to strengthen its forces’ capabilities against the Russian invasion.

It was confirmed during a virtual meeting of G7 leaders held on 12 December. The meeting was also joined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

According to a joint statement from the G7 leaders, the seven countries, including the UK, the US, France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and Canada, will continue providing additional support to address the ‘urgent military requirements’ of Ukraine.

“We will continue to coordinate efforts to meet Ukraine’s urgent requirements for military and defence equipment, with an immediate focus on providing Ukraine with air defence systems and capabilities,” the statement added.

During the meeting, Zelenskiy also requested that the G7 leaders provide more rocket artillery, modern tanks, and long-range missiles for the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

In a statement, the President office of Ukraine said: “Ukraine needs constant artillery support with guns and shells. It will not allow escalation from the Russian’s side. We need more rocket artillery and more long-range missiles.”

In addition, the seven nations’ leaders have also discussed establishing a new ‘multi-agency platform’ that can support the repair, recovery, and reconstruction needs of Ukraine, with assistance of other international partners and organisations.

The new ‘Donor Coordination Platform’ will allow the G7 nations to coordinate and deliver short- and long-term support to Ukraine.

A dedicated Secretariat for this platform will also be established to oversee the ongoing coordination efforts by designating a senior government representative from each nation.

The representatives are expected to hold the associated meeting in January next year.

In May this year, the G7 countries committed to providing an additional $19.8bn of support to Ukraine.
