In collaboration with local companies, Elbit Systems Ltd. and CN ROMARM SA are set to create a Romanian Artillery Center, paving the way for sovereign artillery production and technological know-how transfer in Romania.

The partnership focused on producing Elbit Systems’ 155mm ATMOS advanced mobile Howitzers, which aim to fortify the country’s industrial base, generate employment, and position Romania as a regional artillery hub.

As part of this initiative, Romania aims to strengthen its domestic industrial base by involving additional local companies, including ELMET International SRL, IOR Optics Company, Simultec SRL, and Systematic.

The Romanian Artillery Center will serve as a production hub and facilitate the transfer of know-how for ATMOS howitzers’ manufacturing, production, assembly, and integration. CN ROMARM and its subsidiary, Uzina Automecanica Moreni S.A. (UAM), will be the system integrator, overseeing over 50% of the total workshare.

UAM, with its experience in designing, fabricating, and maintaining armoured vehicles, sees the production of ATMOS Howitzers as an opportunity to diversify its product portfolio.

The partnership aims to address the growing demand for 155mm Howitzers from the Romanian military and other NATO and EU countries. Including additional Romanian companies in the Center of Excellence reinforces the collaborative effort to boost the region’s defence capabilities.

Elbit Systems, with a 25-year commitment to the Romanian market, envisions Romania as a strategic supplier to the Romanian Land Forces and the broader European market.

Udi Vered, general manager at Elbit Systems Land, expressed confidence in the partnership’s potential to position Romania as a key player in artillery solutions for the European market. “Our battle-proven solution can be further developed with ROMARM through UAM production capabilities and transform Romania into our artillery hub for the region.

By working together with ROMARM, we aim to position ourselves as a strategic supplier not only to the Romanian Land Forces, but also to the entire European market.”

Previously, ROMARM and Elbit Systems have formed a strategic partnership to produce Command, Control, Communications, Computer, and Cyber Intelligence (C4I) systems.

Corneliu Vişoianu, General Manager of UAM, highlighted the opportunity for his company to extend its product offerings and integrate new technologies, “As National Centre for Maintenance, UAM is looking at extending its list of products and new technologies in order to answer for the new challenges that the region is facing. In this respect, production of ATMOS Advanced Mobile Howitzers with ELBIT Systems is a great opportunity”.
