The French Armament General Directorate (DGA) has received its first NH90 Standard 2, the new variant of the NH90 TTH helicopter from Airbus Helicopters.
France ordered a total of 18 of the upgraded aircraft, which were designed specifically for special operations, with delivery scheduled by mid-2029.

The NH90 Standard 2 will be operated by the French Army Aviation’s special forces in Pau.
According to Airbus, this variant features the Safran Euroflir 410 D electro-optical system, a new digital map generator, and an updated cabin that accommodates a third crew member.
Enlarged rear sliding windows enable the installation of self-protection weapons.
The aircraft is also prepared for the future Direct Aperture System, which aims to enhance visibility in challenging environments such as dust, snow, or fog.
Further enhancements include a fully digital Thales TopOwl helmet, which allows the crew to view sensor feeds directly on the visor.
Airbus Helicopters CEO Matthieu Louvot said: “We are honoured to deliver this NH90 Standard 2 to the French armed forces. This new standard builds upon the proven capabilities of the NH90 TTH with new breakthrough features designed specifically for special forces.
“More than ever, special forces operators will be able to execute their difficult missions in the toughest environments.”
France’s NH90 Standard 2 fleet was ordered in 2020 via the NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA), and developed by NHIndustries, a consortium of Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo, and Fokker.
In December 2025, Spain joined the programme, placing its own order for 31 helicopters configured to a similar standard.
Matthieu Louvot added: “We are very pleased that Spain has also joined the development of the features that will enhance the crew’s situational awareness. It shows that this new standard of the NH90 is on its way to becoming the benchmark for special forces across the world.”
NHIndustries, claimed to be the largest rotorcraft joint venture in the sector, is tasked with design, manufacturing, and support of NH90 helicopters.
