The US Army is scheduled to deploy its Patriot missile PAC-3 systems in Poland in 2010.
Both countries have accepted a bilateral agreement for the deployment of troops and PAC-3 missiles in Poland that is scheduled to be signed in December 2009.
The US military presence in Poland will enable the creation of a new US ground-to-air missile base in the country.
US Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the US also wants to deploy the missiles in the neighbouring Czech Republic by 2015.
The missile defence shield, which was first proposed and promoted under President Bush has drawn strong criticism from Russia, which considers the positioning of such a system so close to its border as a threat to Russian security.
