The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded a $176m contract to a Raytheon-Lockheed Martin Javelin joint venture for more than 1,300 Javelin missile rounds and associated engineering support.
The Javelin joint venture president Duane Gooden said current battlefield situations require precision at all levels, and Javelin meets the need for precision at both the platoon and squad levels.

“Javelin is the weapon of choice for infantry, special operations and rapid reaction forces due to its unmatched lethality, versatility and gunner survivability,” Gooden said.
The compact, lightweight Javelin is a man-portable, fire-and-forget, multi-purpose missile system specifically designed for one-soldier operations in all environments.
Deliveries of the missiles are expected to begin in 2010 and run until 2012.
