South Korea is in talks with the US to lease or purchase ten mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles following the announcement that the country will redeploy combat forces in Afghanistan.

South Korea has promised to send 320 soldiers in support of the forthcoming 30,000-troop deployment to the region by the US.

South Korean troops will be stationed in the mountainous region of Parwan, where the main US military base is located, to protect South Korean civilian aid workers.

Deputy Minister for Policy Lieutenant General Jang Kwang-il said a final decision will be made as late as next month.

“The military will deploy the South Korean Army’s Barracuda four-wheel-drive armoured vehicles or K21 armoured infantry fighting vehicles if the MRAP deal falls through with the US,” Kwang-il said.
