The Australian Army has selected Thales Australia’s Bushmaster single cab utility for the next stage of the tender evaluation process in the medium weight category of the Department of Defence’s Land 121 phase 3 programme.

Over 2,000 Australian Defence Force (ADF) field vehicles and trailers will be replaced with new vehicles procured across the programme’s medium heavy capability component.

Thales Australia’s managing director, Chris Jenkins, said the decision reflected the high level of industry capability, protected mobility vehicles expertise and customer knowledge available in Australia.

“The Bushmaster has been a very successful vehicle on operations, and we expect the single cab utility to follow in this tradition,” he said.

The single cab utility is a 4×4 wheeled protected logistics vehicle with a payload capacity of 5,000kg on its 9.4m² tray.

The vehicle provides the crew with protection, mobility and combat flexibility to fulfil their mission in the most hostile environments.

The cab uses the same monocoque v-shaped hull as the combat-proven Bushmaster to provide protection against mine blast and IEDs.

The Land 121 Overlander project is a multiphased project that will provide field vehicles, modules and trailers (FVM&T) and the associated support items that the ADF requires in an effort to meet its mobility requirements.
