UK forces operating in Afghanistan have received uniforms bearing the first new camouflage design in over 40 years.

The multiterrain pattern (MTP) camouflage is specifically designed to help soldiers blend in with their surroundings in Helmand Province while also providing greater comfort levels.

Soldiers from the Royal Dragoon Guards have begun wearing the new combat uniforms, which will be issued to all military personnel by 2012.

The camouflage has been trialled in laboratory tests and aerial photography has been used to provide the right colours and brightness for the new camouflage pattern.

The Infantry Trials Unit tested the samples of the MTP camouflage in the UK, Cyprus, Kenya and Afghanistan.
