Through the funding, part of the European Peace Facility (EPF), the Council seeks to scale up support to the war-hit nation to secure its territorial integrity and safeguard civilians.

Under the package, €490m has been earmarked to equip Ukrainian armed forces with military equipment for defensive purposes.

Another €10m will meet other requirements including personal protective equipment, first aid kits and fuel.

The aid package also includes the provision of maintenance of equipment previously delivered by EU nations to Ukraine.

EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy high representative Josep Borrell said: “The mobilisation of an additional €500m by EU member states is yet another proof that we remain steadfast in our support to the Ukrainian armed forces to defend the country against the escalating illegal aggression.

“Russia’s latest indiscriminate attacks on Ukrainian civilians and civilian infrastructure are another proof of Russia’s complete disrespect for human rights and international law. The EU will continue supporting Ukraine as long as it takes and as long as is needed.”

The latest assistance brings the EU’s commitment to Ukraine under the EPF to €3.1bn.

Meanwhile, EU foreign ministers have decided to launch a military assistance mission to train nearly 15,000 Ukrainian soldiers starting next month.

In this regard, Borrell tweeted: “We are stepping up our support to Ukraine to defend itself from Russia’s illegal aggression, launching an EU Military Assistance Mission. EUMAM will train the Ukrainian armed forces to continue their courageous fight against the Russian aggression.”

In July, the EU Foreign Affairs Council approved €500m under the EPF to provide military assistance to the Ukrainian armed forces.
