The Brazilian Federal Government has granted R$45m (US$28.2m) additional funding to launch the Astros Project 2020, which is aimed at equipping the Brazilian Army as part of the armed forces modernisation process.

The Astros Project 2020 is an evolved version of the Astros II self-propelled multiple rocket launcher.

The project will enable the Brazilian Army to acquire an advanced surface-to-surface missile launch system that is developed indigenously.

Under the project, the army will receive 18 launch vehicles, 18 ammunition resupply vehicles, three fire control units, three weather stations, three recovery vehicles and three armoured command and control vehicles for each battery and another, final vehicle for integrated command and control.

The new concept in the MLRS also includes integration of the AV-TM, a high-precision guided cruise missile with a range of 300km.
