The contract, which is based on sensor performance and capability, will allow delivery of WESCAM MX-electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) and laser designator sensor suites and related services.

The company’s WESCAM MX-10D and WESCAM MX-15D sensors provide capabilities such as multi-spectral imaging and designation for various aircraft across the US Army Special Operations Aviation Command (USASOAC) inventory.

According to the company, the contract will support the US Army’s sensor modernisation strategy.

L3Harris Technologies Integrated Mission Systems president Sean Stackley said: “We’re honoured that the US Army has selected our next-generation electro-optics and infrared sensors to support their sensor modernisation strategy and we look forward to providing the warfighter this capability that’s ideally suited to their rotary-wing operations.

“This is an important step in our long-term investment strategy to improve sensor technologies in support of our Army Aviation customers’ mission success.”

The latest contract marks the second airborne sensor programme with the US Army in the last three years.

The first airborne sensor programme was a $454m multi-year IDIQ contract that included WESCAM MX-10D EO/IR sensor products to support the US Army’s Tactical Uncrewed Air Systems Shadow UAV (RQ-7Bv2) programme.

WESCAM MX-Series systems have been used by the US Army in several combat operations, including current intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions worldwide.

The systems are designed to gather critical mission information and offer high-precision situational awareness to defend personnel against emerging targets.

These products have also supported US Army aviation programmes for more than 20 years.

Last July, L3Harris was contracted by the Canadian Commercial Corporation (CCC) for the supply of WESCAM MX-series products and services.
