The Indian Army is holding an annual joint training exercise dubbed ‘Shoorveer’ with the Indian Air Force (IAF) in Bikaner, Rajasthan, as part of its efforts to enhance its battle worthiness on the western front.

An unnamed army official said troops belonging to the South Western Sapta Shakti Command have now built up in the deserts of Rajasthan to carry out the annual summer exercise.

"Presently, the formations are practising their battle drills in the designated training areas. The collective training started with honing up of basic battle procedures and tactical drills," the official added.

In addition to the army’s Jaipur-based South Western Command’s elite 1 Strike Corps and 10 Corps, the two-month long exercise also involves participation from the Western and South Western Commands of the IAF.

More than 200 tanks and over 50,000 troops have been deployed for the war games, alongside the air force’s frontline aircrafts, including the Su-30MKI, Mirage 2000 and Jaguars AWACs to test the level of training.

According to the official, a number of field firings are currently being carried out to check the accuracy and lethality of the weapon systems, together with innovations and modifications by the units and formations to enhance combat power.

"The troops will build the momentum of training gradually, with increased combat tempo to set the stage for a major joint army-air force exercise in the later part of the exercise."

"The exercise will culminate with the Sapta Shakti Command, along with IAF, carrying out swift battle manoeuvres and joint operations."

Based on the Integrated Theatre Battle Concept, Exercise Shoorveer is designed to enable the army to validate its warfighting concepts, while working towards a ‘capability based approach’ relying on a series of transformational initiatives, concepts, organisational structures and absorption of new age technology.
