Navistar MTV fleet

The US Army has taken delivery of the initial batch of armoured cab units designed for installation on the Afghan National Security Forces’ (ANSF) Medium Tactical Vehicles (MTV) fleet from Navistar Defense at its facility in West Point, Mississippi, US.

It follows a $23m urgent delivery contract awarded by the US Army Tank Automotive Command Life Cycle Management Command for retrofit of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Afghan National Police (ANP) MTV’s existing 205 commercial cabs with armoured cabs in February.

Navistar Defense vice-president and general manager Bob Walsh was reported by Shephard as saying that the rapid manufacturing and supply of armoured cabs would assist in the transition of the US’s security mission and also facilitate withdrawal of the US forces, while protecting the ANSF.

US Army Transportation Systems project manager colonel William Boruff added: "This solution provides a robust route clearance capability for Afghan personnel, improving their safety each and every day."

Additional contract responsibility includes upgrade of additional vehicle elements for enhanced survivability, which will enable ANSF personnel to carry out route clearance operations with mine roller applications.

Scheduled to be accomplished through re-use of the MTV’s original components, the cost-efficient upgrade is designed to safeguard ANA and ANP personnel from ballistic and blast threats during tactical operations.
