Eaton has been awarded a contract for the modernisation of the electrical infrastructure of the US Army’s temperature test facility, located at the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico, US.

The company’s electrical services and systems division will provide turnkey engineering services and power distribution equipment to improve power reliability and system safety.

Eaton electrical engineering services and systems division vice-president and general manager John Stampfel said: "A reliable electrical system and consistent power supply are vital to support the accuracy of critical testing at scientific research and development facilities such as the White Sands Missile Range.

"Eaton is well positioned to help the US Army re-establish functionality to its unique testing facility."

The contract also requires the company to provide a range of electrical solutions, including motor control centres, metering equipment, voltage regulators, transformers and fault interrupter switchgear and electrical switches.

The upgrade project is expected to help the facility continue to support the development of military technology though the simulation of environments, ranging from severe heat to sub-zero temperatures.

Located two miles from the main post area of WSMR, the temperature test facility is approved for the testing of hazardous test items weighing up to 30,000lb, and is claimed to be the largest explosive licensed temperature test facility within the US Department of Defense.

It includes a large chamber for environmental tests of complete weapon systems, a small chamber for high / low temperature and freezing rain testing, as well as a salt fog / humidity chamber.
