The US Department of Defense (DoD) has unveiled a new $6bn security assistance package for Ukraine, marking a significant investment in the country’s defence capabilities amidst ongoing conflicts.

Funded by the recently signed national security supplemental, this package aims to enhance Ukraine’s air defences, artillery, and sustain previously committed capabilities.

It is part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), which differs from the Presidential Drawdown Authority that allows for rapid delivery of equipment from DoD stocks.

The latest assistance includes a range of capabilities, such as additional munitions for Patriot air defence systems and National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS).

It also provides equipment to integrate Western air defence launchers, missiles, and radars with Ukraine’s existing air defence systems; counter-UAS systems; munitions for laser-guided rockets; multi-mission and counter-artillery radars; and more ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS).

Furthermore, the assistance extends to 155mm and 152mm artillery rounds, precision aerial munitions, Switchblade and Puma Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), tactical vehicles for towing, demolition munitions, and small arms with ammunition.

It also includes components to support Ukrainian production of UAS and other capabilities, alongside ancillary items and support for training, maintenance, and sustainment activities.

A press statement from the US DoD reads: “This USAI package highlights the strong and unwavering U.S. commitment to meet Ukraine’s most pressing immediate and longer-term capability needs to fight Russian aggression as part of the global coalition we have built with some 50 Allies and partners.”
