The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has placed order with Saab for the RBS 70 NG mobile short-range air defence system (MSHORAD), along with associated missiles.

This procurement was officially recorded in the second quarter of 2025.

The order also includes components that will facilitate the future integration of the system into Sweden’s (MSHORAD) capabilities.

Saab’s business area Dynamics head Görgen Johansson said: “We are continuously contributing to strengthening the capabilities of the Swedish Armed Forces and Saab’s air defence systems play a vital role in keeping Sweden’s skies secure.”

The contract is valued at approximately Skr1.5bn ($158.4m), with the delivery timeline set for the years 2027-2028.

The MSHORAD solution provided by Saab based on the RBS 70 NG system features an automatic target tracker, night vision capability, and can engage threats such as aircraft, uncrewed drones, and missiles within a range of up to 9km.

The RBS 70 NG system is portable and can be mounted on various vehicle platforms and supports networking and remote operation features.

Saab reports that the system can be deployed in as little as 45 seconds and reloaded in under five seconds.

FMV army materiel business area head Jonas Lotsne said: “The purpose of the acquisition is to increase the Armed Forces’ capability over time and give the brigades increased power to meet airborne threats.”

Currently, the RBS 70 NG system is deployed in countries like Sweden, the Czech Republic, and Brazil. It has been an integral part of the Swedish Armed Forces’ arsenal since 1977.

In January 2024, Saab received a Skr300m contract from the FMV for its MSHORAD systems to be fitted onto BvS10 armoured vehicles in two different configurations for the Swedish Armed Forces.

Additionally, Lithuania’s Ministry of National Defence also placed an order in July 2024 for the RBS 70 NG MSHORAD system.
