ROK requests sale of AGM-114R Hellfire missiles from US

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified US Congress of the potential foreign military sales (FMS) of AGM-114R Hellfire Missiles to the Republic of Korea (RoK).

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified US Congress of the potential foreign military sales (FMS) of AGM-114R Hellfire Missiles to the Republic of Korea (RoK).

Approved by the US State Department, the total estimated cost of the FMS and related equipment is valued at $36m.

The AGM-114 Hellfire II is an air-to-ground missile developed primarily for the anti-armour role.

The sale package will include 288 AGM-114R Hellfire missiles and AGM-114R spare parts.

Services such as the US Government and contractor technical, engineering, repair, storage, and logistics personnel services are also part of the FMS programme.

Furthermore, other associated elements of logistical and programme support were also requested.

Lockheed Martin will serve as the principal contractor for the FMS.

According to DSCA, the Hellfire missiles will add to ROK’s current weapon inventory for AH-64E attack helicopter and boost missile capability.

With the missiles, the country will be able to defeat ‘current and future threats’, as well as develop interoperability with other AGM-114R Hellfire missile operators in the region.

DSCA said in a statement: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by meeting the legitimate security and defence needs of one of the closest allies in the INDOPACOM Theatre.”

“It is vital to US national interests to assist the ROK in developing and maintaining a strong and ready self-defence capability.”
