The US State Department has given its official approval for a potential Foreign Military Sale to the Government of Finland for a M270A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) upgrade, along with associated equipment in a deal worth $395m, (€363m) with Lockheed Martin, Chelton Inc., Leonardo DRS, and Loc Performance Products, Inc. as the principal contractors.

This decision will improving Finland’s military capabilities, upgrading a system that has proven been to be highly effective in recent conflicts, most recently where the M270 MLRS has been deployed in Ukraine, providing high-precision shoot-and-scoot volleys of rocket munitions, on a platform capable of being transported by C-17 and C-5 aircraft. These upgrades will make the M270A2 compatible with future munitions, such as the Extended-Range GMLRS and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM).

In October of 2022, Finland became the first customer of the Extended-Range GMLRS, a missile designed to offer a choice of munitions with reliability and precision at longer ranges, demonstrated effectively at a distance of 135km., with claims from its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin, to be able to reach targets at 150km distance.

The Government of Finland expressed its interest in providing the M270A2 upgrade for its M270A1 MLRS, bringing a range of essential features that include: intercom systems; radio communication mounts; machine gun mounts; and a battle management system vehicle integration kit. The new model features a new 600 horsepower engine, improved armoured cab and Common Fire Control System.

A joint all-domain operations-enabling heavy-tracked mobile launcher, the M270A2 MLRS can be used to strike enemy artillery, air defence concentrations, trucks, light armour and personnel carriers located at greater distances.

The mobile system can fire missiles and relocate at high speed, minimising the risk of damage to the MLRS from retaliatory strikes by adversaries.
