Solid state drives (SSDs) have been used for many years as storage in embedded applications where temperature, shock and vibration has made mechanical storage such as disk or tape unreliable. These SSDs were either packaged in hard disk form factors such as 3.5in or 2.5in cases or in consumer electronic form factors such as the Compact Flash (CF) or Secure Digital (SD) Cards used on digital cameras and cell phones.
