The Danish army has received a major upgrade of their network management system (NMS) solution provided by Systematic. Improvements include a brand new GIS engine, MIP Block 3 capability and improved scalability. This comprises the biggest upgrade of the NMS since its initial installation in 2004.

The Danish army’s NMS solution has evolved with regular improvements being made since the first version was deployed for operations. The latest upgrades made by Systematic are:

  • Integration of the new SitaWare Headquarters 5 product, which provides greater scalability and C2 functionality. This integration means that a large part of the ‘engine’ of the NMS solution was reengineered to accommodate new software architecture
  • Integration of SitaWare Headquarters 5’s new communication products, which support both MIP Block 2 and MIP Block 3. The NMS solution is now able to interoperate in both MIP Block 2 and Block 3 coalition environments
  • Integration of ESRI GIS to support the widest range of military map formats, terrain data and terrain tools
  • Improvement to the user interface, based on feedback from actual users

Several acceptance tests have also been performed by the Danish army to assure that the upgraded NMS solution meets the same requirements for ease-of-use, reliability and operational performance as its predecessors. Another important aspect of these tests has been to prove that the new solution matches the actual operational user expectation. All of the tests have been accepted by the Danish army.

The result of this upgrade makes the NMS solution more robust and more powerful than ever before and also means that it is fully prepared for any future demands.

The NMS solution is based on Systematic SitaWare 5.2 with a number of additional communications features to support the management of trunk networks – specifically for the Danish army is the support of their SELEX-based multi protocol switches. The most important network management areas being:

  • Fast frequency allocation
  • Network status view within geographical information system
  • Interaction with and management of equipment
  • Quality of service management

The system is ideal for signal units cooperating with forces using MIP block 2 or MIP block 3 C2-systems and it’s an open architecture are ensuring the potential use of other communications systems or extensions with new functionalities.
