The US Army’s Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) has added a Milrem Robotics’ THeMIS uncrewed ground vehicle (UGV) to its equipment roster.  

Financial details of the procurement deal remain undisclosed.

The laboratory plans to use this technology for advanced research purposes in the harsh conditions of the Arctic.  

This acquisition is in line with the US Army Corps of Engineers’ aim to foster technological innovation to enhance national security and operational readiness.  

With the integration of the MIFIK Intelligent Functions Kit, the THeMIS UGV gains autonomous navigation capabilities. 

The THeMIS UGV will be deployment in a variety of experimental and operational scenarios to evaluate its performance and contribute to the broader research into autonomous systems suitable for cold-weather operations.

Designed as a modular platform, the THeMIS UGV can be adapted for a range of applications, including logistics, reconnaissance, and operational support.  

Its cargo configuration allows for transportation of supplies and equipment to mission areas, reducing both the cognitive load on soldiers and the need for additional manpower. 

It can be customised to meet various operational needs, from combat and intelligence to logistics, while simultaneously minimising risks to human personnel. 

Milrem Robotics chief sales officer Patrick Shepherd said: “The THeMIS is the most mature UGV on the market. Its integration into multiple nations’ combat formations reduces customers’ overall integration and procurement risk.  

“Milrem has the lessons learned and depth of experience to ensure a smooth integration into the military forces.” 

The THeMIS has already been adopted in 19 countries and is claimed to be the most popular UGV in its size category.  

CRREL, a division of the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), focuses on addressing complex engineering and scientific challenges in cold and harsh environments.  

It aims to improve infrastructure, mobility, and operational effectiveness for both military and civilian operations in extreme climates. 

In May 2024, Milrem Robotics expanded its production capabilities by inaugurating a facility in Tallinn, Estonia.  

Located near the company’s headquarters, this new plant has increased the annual production capacity to more than 500 units of the THeMIS UGV.
