Poland’s MNoD stated that this decision is made in accordance with the Homeland Defence Act of 11 March 2022, Article 199, section 2:

“A professional soldier may be dismissed from his official position in the event of: 1) the needs of the Armed Forces; 2) initiation of inspection verification proceedings referred to in the provisions of the Act of 5 August 2010 on the protection of classified information.”

Established in 1993 and stationed in Strasbourg, France, the ‘Eurocorps’ is a military unit linked with the Nato Command structure and the EU command and control. Although the institution remains autonomous, it is available to these organisations with a unanimous decision from the Framework Nations taken by the Common Committee (a decisive body of Eurocorps).

The Eurocorps unit has relayed the fact that it is Poland’s prerogative to recall Gromadziński back to Poland, as the country transitioned from an associated nation to a Eurocorps Framework Nation in 2022, which gives it a say in the structure and tasks of this multinational command.

Nevertheless, Eurocorps added that the unit remains “stable and will continue to fulfill its missions towards Nato and EU.”

The unit has swiftly replaced Gromadziński with Lieutenant General Piotr Błazeusz on 28 March. Błazeusz is an alumnus of the US Air Force Academy, University of Warsaw, Pułtusk Academy of Humanities and the Postgraduate Course on Defence Policy at the National Defence University of Warsaw.

Poland’s MNoD was not immediately available for comment.
