Patria has revealed that its AMV XP armoured modular vehicle has been selected for the Japanese Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) Wheeled Armoured Personnel Carrier (WAPC) programme.

The chosen AMV XP vehicle will be operated by the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) as their new 8×8 APC vehicle.

The new platform will replace the JGSDF’s existing Type-96 8×8 APC vehicles.

This announcement signifies that the Finnish company Patria has the vehicle manufacturing licence in Japan, which will directly contribute to strengthening the domestic industrial base and technological development, and will help to boost Japan’s economy.

The latest milestone has further marked the immediate beginning of the next step of the programme that will see licence negotiations.

The company has been involved in Japan’s WAPC programme since 2018. Patria also established its Japanese subsidiary, Patria Japan, to support the programme and its associated activities in the country.

According to Patria, the selection of the AMV XP vehicle will further enhance its corporation with Japan and its industry partners.
