The German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has signed a government-to-government agreement with Israel to equip its Leopard 2 Main Battle Tanks Rafael’s Trophy Active Protection Systems (APS).

The contract with Rafael for the initial batch of Trophy APS systems includes a contract with Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), the maker of the Leopard 2, covering the supply of a company of tanks, interceptors, and spare parts, as well as operational and technical training.

Rafael said the systems will be delivered over the next few years, adding that it expects Germany to procure additional Trophy systems to equip the majority of its Leopard 2’s with the APS capability.

Rafael Land and Naval Division EVP and head Dr. Ran Gozali said: “Germany is joining an exclusive group of advanced tier-1 nations who have chosen Trophy APS to protect their troops and assets from the ever-increasing threat of anti-armor warfare.

“We are thankful to the German government for joining other user nations and for their confidence in our system and our experience, and we look forward to working with KMW on the integration and installation of Trophy on the Leopard 2 and on future platforms.”

The Trophy APS has also been delivered to the US Army for its Abrams main battle tanks after being awarded a contract for the system on an urgent need basis.

The Trophy APS is also installed on Israel’s Merkava tanks and its Namer armoured personnel carriers. Rafael has contracts for the serial production of over 1,800 Trophy APS.The system has also undergone 5,400 successful field tests.
