RG34

RG34 is a multi-purpose mine protected vehicle (MPMPV) produced by BAE Systems OMC. The vehicle is intended to provide safe transportation of troops in explosive and mine-filled environments. RG34 is a reliable and easy to operate vehicle similar to the other RG range of vehicles.

The RG34 vehicle was originally designed as Iguana by Industrial & Automotive Design South Africa (IADSA), under an agreement with Belgium-based Sabiex. BAE Systems acquired the design rights of the vehicle from Sabiex in 2009.

The vehicle can be used as an armoured personnel carrier (APC), weapon platform, mobile command post and ambulance to support several multipurpose light missions such as reconnaissance, patrol, security, command and control, specialist support and light armour combat.

RG34 design

The RG34 incorporates a welded monocoque hull design including commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components. The vehicle presents a low silhouette and affords occupants an excellent field of vision and comfortable interior easing fatigue on long patrols.

The crew section accommodates a driver and commander, while the troop compartment houses six infantrymen. The vehicle is fitted with nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) protection systems and air conditioning systems. The vehicle integrates armoured windows for all-round visibility.

RG34 measures 5.05m in length, 2.35m in width and 2.15m in height. The baseline configuration weighs 7,500kg, and the vehicle can carry a payload of 2,000kg.

Armament of RG34

The RG34 vehicle is equipped with a remotely operated TRT-B25 tactical remote turret (TRT) armed with a 25mm M242 ATK cannon with a 7.62mm M240 co-axial machine gun. The TRT allows the gunner to fire the weapon from inside the vehicle under protection. The man machine interface (MMI) is incorporated with the ballistic computer within the vehicle. A 10.4in LCD touch screen display is also installed in the vehicle for video interface.

The turret is equipped with a state-of-the-art electro-optical sight capable of identifying targets at 3,000m during the day and 1,500m during night conditions. The TRT also includes three FOV day cameras, thermal (IR) night camera for detection of target at 8,000m at night, and a laser range finder with a range of more than 10km with 5m accuracy. Four 76/81mm smoke grenade launchers are also installed aboard the turret.

RG34 self-protection

The hull is made of high-quality ballistic steel, which protects the occupants from small arms fire, air-burst fragments, armour-piercing rounds and anti-tank mines. The vehicle can be integrated with add-on armour and defence suites to address various threat scenarios in today’s battlefield.

The vehicle offers STANAG 4569 Level 2 ballistic protection and STANAG 4569 Level 2A/2B mine protection.

Engine details of the RG634 multipurpose mine protected vehicle

The TG34 vehicle is powered by an inter-cooled turbo-diesel engine mated with five-speed automatic transmission with lock-up. The engine develops a maximum power of 160kW and provides a maximum speed of 105km/h. The power-to-weight ratio of the vehicle is 21.3kW/t. The engine offers high fuel economy while delivering superior performance.

RG34 MPMPV mobility

RG34 is a permanent 4×4 vehicle with a multi-link hydro-pneumatic suspension. The suspension ensures high on-road performance, minimum turning circle and a quality ride on rough terrain. The vehicle is fitted with water propellers for amphibious mobility.

The large diameter wheels and long travel suspension provide the vehicle with superior off-road mobility and clearance over obstacles. The vehicle integrates pneumatic disc brakes equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS). The mobility is further enhanced with run-flat inserts and central tire inflation system (CTIS).

The vehicle can reach a maximum distance of 1,000km. It can negotiate a gradient of 60% and side slope of 40%. It is capable of crossing a vertical obstacle of 500mm and trench of 750mm.
