Germany’s Rheinmetall has strengthened its production network within Romania, with a focus on local manufacturing of Lynx infantry fighting vehicle (IFV), ammunition, and propellants.

The company’s “comprehensive” network includes its Romanian subsidiaries, additional local Rheinmetall operations, and a newly established centre dedicated to training and professional development and new collaborations with local enterprises.

This strategy enhances the company's footprint in Romania and solidifies its role as a primary manufacturer and service provider for the Romanian military.

Rheinmetall's strategy for localisation also includes partnership with Romanian firms such as Uzina Automecanica Moreni, Interactive Software SRL, and MarcTel-SIT.

These alliances aim to enhance local sourcing and assembly activities while incorporating Romanian expertise into the manufacturing process, stated the company.

Rheinmetall Automecanica will produce the Lynx IFV, supported by a strong supply chain with less reliance on external providers.

The company stated: “With this strategic initiative, Rheinmetall Automecanica is not only improving Romania’s defence capabilities, but also laying the foundation for a sustainable and independent defence industry.”

Rheinmetall Munitions Romania is set to produce medium-calibre ammunition for IFVs and air defence systems, while Victoria Explosive Powder Factory will handle propellant production with Rheinmetall supplying technology and knowledge for a propylene facility.

Domestic service centres will undertake the maintenance and support of military hardware, ensuring constant operational readiness.

The Rheinmetall Excellence Centre in Romania will facilitate the transfer of essential knowledge to local employees.

Furnished with advanced simulators and exhaustive training modules, the centre will equip Romanian personnel with hands-on experience and knowledge in managing, maintaining, and advancing defence technologies, particularly concerning the Lynx IFV.

The company said in a statement: “Rheinmetall’s investment in local production will make a significant contribution to the Romanian economy by creating hundreds of jobs in various sectors, including manufacturing, engineering and technical services. Cooperation with Romanian companies will also boost local supply chains, create additional business opportunities and promote industrial growth.”
