Rheinmetall to supply Bundeswehr with mobile medical units

Bundeswehr will receive the first medical units that comply with NATO's Role 2B standards in 2029.

The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has awarded an order to Rheinmetall to provide the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) with highly mobile, protected medical facilities.

The framework agreement, which was agreed upon in September 2025, is worth more than €300m ($349m), covering six systems.

Bundeswehr will receive the first units as a series model in 2029.

Designed to meet NATO's Role 2B standards, these medical units will be used by German troops in Lithuania, among others.

According to Rheinmetall, each of the mobile medical facilities will be made of a total of 11 vehicles with associated multifunctional containers.

During operational deployment, these containers will remain on military HX trucks produced by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles.

The mobility of the medical facilities enables rapid deployment in response to national and alliance defence requirements, adapting to varying threat levels.

Consequently, this allows for the provision of immediate medical care to severely wounded personnel near the front line.

The contract, which runs until 2040, will be implemented by Rheinmetall Project Solutions. There is provision for additional systems to be ordered.

Rheinmetall Project Solutions managing director Dr Deniz Akitürk said: "This will enable us to provide our soldiers on the ground with the best possible medical care."

In addition to these medical facilities, Rheinmetall had provided the Bundeswehr with a new type of air defence vehicle called the Boxer Skyranger 30 for testing purposes.

Bundeswehr also ordered 568 new vehicles, valued at more than €330m ($384m) from Rheinmetall in January this year. The deal includes 349 UTF-trucks in both 5-tonne (t) and 15t models, and 219 swap-body trucks.
