The Iveco – Oto Melara Consortium (CIO) has delivered the first Ariete main battle tank upgraded to the C2 version to the Italian Army.
The handover took place at a formal event at the Cecchignola Military Compound in Rome.
A batch of 90 vehicles are undergoing a technological overhaul to align with the contemporary operational requirements of the Italian Armed Forces.
This upgrade initiative, coupled with a decade-long logistical support package for the fleet, forms part of the Italian Army's ongoing efforts to modernise its inventory of tracked vehicles.
Italian Army chief of staff lieutenant general Carmine Masiello said: “Today’s ceremony represents a crucial stage in a continuous and significant evolution: the delivery of the Ariete C2 tank, a symbol of innovation and collaboration between the Army and the defence industry. It is not just a technical milestone, but it represents the confirmation of a shared commitment to grow and face the complex challenges of the future together.”
The Ariete modernisation programme covers a range of improvements aimed at enhancing the tank's mobility, firepower, and command and control capabilities.
Key upgrades delivered to the vehicle include an increase in engine displacement, adoption of an electronically controlled common rail injection system, and an updated supercharging system.
According to CIO, these changes have increased engine power by 20% boost, delivering 1500 horsepower.
Additionally, the enhanced torque at low revolutions per minute significantly improved performance during manoeuvres such as pivoting, launching, and restarting.
To accommodate the heavier vehicle along with the higher engine power and torque, substantial updates to the gearbox and final drive were also necessary, said the company.
The braking system was also overhauled that helped address both performance and obsolescence issues associated to parts sourced from overseas.
Additionally, new tracks designed for better mobility and reduced crew vibration have been fitted to the Ariete tank.
The tank's turret has been upgraded to match those found on latest-generation tanks, featuring high-performance electric drive systems instead of hydraulic servos and a new digital fire control system.
Enhancements in interoperability have been achieved through a new C2D N EVO Command and Control system and integration with modern communication tools such as four-channel software defined radio and satellite communications that work with contemporary digital intercom systems, stated the company.
Ergonomics at the commander and gunner's stations have been improved with redesigned interfaces that include multifunctional screens.
The driver's station has also seen significant updates with a new digital panel that incorporates navigation functions interconnected with the command-an- control system. Crew safety is further bolstered by an advanced fire-fighting and anti-explosion system.
The Italian Ministry of Defence recently issued a notice to industry soliciting proposals for the procurement of a new reconnaissance vehicle for the Italian Army.
