The US approves sale of MIM-104E Patriot missiles to the Netherlands

The proposed sale will support the country’s armed forces with enhanced capabilities to defend their territories.

The US State Department has approved a $1.219bn potential foreign military sale (FMS) of Patriot MIM-104E Guidance Enhanced Missile-Tactical (GEM-T) ballistic missiles and related equipment to the Netherlands.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified US Congress in this regard.

The Netherlands had placed a request to procure 96 Patriot MIM-104E GEM-T ballistic missiles, tools and test equipment, range and test programmes, and support equipment, including technical documentation.

Quality assurance team support, technical assistance from the contractor and the US Government, engineering, logistics support, Systems Integration and Checkout, and field office support are also included in the package.

Raytheon Corporation will serve as the prime contractor.

The proposed sale will not need the assignment of additional representatives from the US Government or the contractor agency to the Netherlands.

The latest approval is expected to support the Netherlands with enhanced military capabilities to improve national and territorial defence.

The procurement will also help the country to build on interoperability with the US and Nato members.

In a statement, the DSCA said: “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of a Nato ally that is an important force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.”

In September 2020, the US State Department approved the Netherlands’ request for the Patriot missile system

The potential of the FMS followed the Netherlands’ request to procure 34 Patriot Advanced Capability 3 (PAC-3) Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles.
