The US has approved a potential foreign military sale of AW-119Kx helicopters and associated equipment to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) has notified Congress about the estimated $100m (Km172m) sale.

Under the deal, Bosnia and Herzegovina is seeking AW-119Kx helicopters; in-country contractor field service representative support; qualification and transition training of pilots and maintainers; program management reviews; technical assistance; product support; associated aviation ground support equipment.

In a press statement, DSCA said: “The proposed sale will support the foreign policy goals and the national security objectives of the US by improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe.”

The capability is expected to bolster the operational capabilities of the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina, enabling it to address both current and emerging security challenges.

The helicopters are also expected to enhance Bosnia and Herzegovina’s participation in regional and Nato exercises and improve the country’s ability to operate in mountainous and hard-to-reach areas.

Additional roles will include disaster relief, search and rescue, humanitarian missions, and pilot training.

The sale package also covers platform-peculiar ground support equipment; hardware; ground run and flight test validation and verification testing; initial spares, repair and consumable parts; and logistics and programme support.

Leonardo Helicopters US, AgustaWestland Philadelphia Corporation, is designated as the deal’s principal contractor.

The AW-119Kx model features the Garmin G1000NXi VFR glass cockpit, which improves situational awareness.

Known for its manoeuvrability and reliability in demanding conditions, the aircraft is particularly well-suited for emergency medical and rescue missions.

It combines the advantages of light twin-engine helicopters, such as system redundancy, with high endurance and long-range capabilities.
