The UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has awarded Elbit Systems UK a £102m contract to supply its Dismounted Joint Fires Integrator (DJFI) ‘sensor to shooter’ system for Joint Terminal Attack Controllers and Fire Support Teams.
Delivered over five-years, the DJFI system is a networked target acquisition system is capable of generating and transmitting targeting information to weapon systems. Elbit said DJFI can interface with the radio systems already used by the British Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines.
Personnel can interact with information gathered by the thermal-enabled DJFI via a tablet and communicate it to artillery or aircraft, allowing them to engage the target accurately. The tablet system allows personnel to classify potential targets while remaining in cover.
Defence Procurement Minister Jeremy Quin said: “This contract with Elbit Systems UK not only delivers the very latest in battlefield technology to our frontline soldiers but also invests in the British defence industry, sustaining more than 500 jobs across the UK.”
The MOD said the DJFI would deliver ‘six distinct fires integration equipment suites’ which correspond to different battlefield roles. The department added that the system was designed to be ‘integrated and used alongside similar equipment’ of allied armed forces.
Elbit Systems UK CEO Martin Fausset said: “The UK is a significant market for Elbit Systems and the Company intends to continue with its efforts to support the British Armed Forces and expand the cooperation with the UK industry.
“The systems to be supplied by Elbit Systems UK represent our commitment to continuously provide the most advanced technology to those on the frontline.”
While focused on British Army use, DJFI will also be delivered to 3 Commando Brigade of the Royal Marines, the RAF Regiment and UK special forces. The Assistant Head of the Army Joint Effects Delivery team Colonel Sheldon said the system ‘will contribute directly to modernising our forces to face future threats.’
Fausset added: “The adaptability to multi-domain warfare is a core part of Elbit Systems UK’s offering, combining brand-new hardware and proven-software systems.
“This continual evolution provides the cross-force adaptability which is vital for successful contemporary warfare. At its heart, D-JFI will provide operational advantage to the British Armed Forces in an increasingly technological battlefield.”
The DJFI integrates several Elbit technologies including the TORCH-X Battle Management Application; its Hattorix system for undetected generation targets, the CORAL Multi-Spectral electro-optical payload and Rattler XR Laser Designator.
Land Equipment Operating Centre for Defence Equipment & Support director Major General Darren Crook added: “Our commitment to equipping and supporting our armed forces has never faltered and I am delighted that we have been able to continue to secure state-of-the-art equipment for the British Army.”
