The US Army has placed a $22.4m order with Swedish defence contractor Saab for the supply of Vehicle Tactical Engagement Simulation System (VTESS) Base Kits.
The order forms part of the Bridge to Evolution Synthetic Training Environment Tactical Engagement Simulation Systems Multiple-Award Contract (BEST MAC), under which the overall contract could reach a value of $60.8m over a period of 60 months.

Saab will deliver the VTESS Base Kits under the contract’s Lot 2 terms. The systems are intended to support the US Army’s Tactical Engagement Simulation Systems (TESS) programme.
According to the company, the simulation kits are designed to equip both tactical and non-tactical vehicles with laser detector training systems.
These are intended for use in training exercises that replicate real-time casualty effects for force-on-force tactical engagement scenarios.
Saab US president and CEO Erik Smith said: “The VTESS base kits enable the US Army vehicles to participate in force-on-force exercises utilizing a dramatically improved, reliable, soldier friendly system.
“Our tech-driven, hands-on training solutions are developed in partnership with our customers – we constantly develop, adopt and improve new technology to meet changing customer needs.”
The TESS programme is managed by the US Army’s Capability Program Executive Simulation, Training, Test and Threat (CPE ST3).
TESS uses laser-based technology in live simulation training to assess variables such as the participant’s timing and accuracy, as well as the behaviour and characteristics of targets, in order to determine hit and kill probabilities.
Saab’s VTESS solution is designed to integrate with both current and legacy Army TESS training equipment and incorporates Government-owned standards, Live Personal Area Network (L-PAN), and Live Tactical Engagement Composition (LTEC).
In addition to the present order, Saab received a contract from the US Army in October last year for Giraffe 1X radar systems, valued at approximately $46m, to support security cooperation partners.
