According to the company, the L60 will deliver a range approximately 30% greater than conventional L52 guns.
Currently, the widely used PzH 2000 self-propelled howitzer fitted with a 155mm L52 main gun can hit targets up to 30km with standard Nato shells and up to 40km with extended range projectiles.
Rheinmetall has increased the barrel length and enlarge the chamber have been underway for several years, resulting in a gun system that weighs just over 2.5 tons and measures 9,300 millimetres in length.
Recent tests have demonstrated progress in the development. In January 2025, the system underwent successful testing at firing pressures exceeding 600 MPa.
Throughout 2025, further trials were carried out, with muzzle velocities above 1,100 metres per second achieved.
A first firing demonstration of the L60 is planned for 2026, the company stated.
Milestones in the L60 project include early validation of the design concept and procurement of initial barrels, with production already beginning. Rheinmetall states that recent developments have enabled these steps to proceed.
Rheinmetall said: “In the field of 155mm tube artillery, Rheinmetall is not only one of the leading system integrators but also one of the largest ammunition producers worldwide. Production capacities are currently being significantly expanded.”
The company is showcasing the weapon systems for the first time at its booth F115/F116 at Eurosatory 2026.
