Rheinmetall and General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) formalised an agreement to assess joint production possibilities for the Vektrex manoeuvring projectile, a 155 mm artillery munition.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) for this partnership was signed at Eurosatory 2026 by GA-EMS president Scott Forney and Rheinmetall’s Weapon and Ammunition Division CEO Roman Koehne.

The companies agreed to assess the production of Vektrex in response to international demand for industrial-scale manufacturing, as governments seek to replenish munition inventories, expand defence industrial resources, and modernise artillery for high-intensity operations.
This MoU follows ongoing investment by GA-EMS in the development of precision-strike munitions and manufacturing processes that can be expanded.
In addition, Rheinmetall’s experience in munitions production and its NATO-compliant facilities are expected to support large-scale production of Vektrex to meet the needs of Alliance and partner countries.
Scott Forney said: “Operational demand continues to outpace traditional guided-munition manufacturing output. This collaboration helps allied industry expand long-range strike capability while leveraging artillery systems already deployed across coalition forces.”
Vektrex, developed by GA-EMS, is a manoeuvring projectile designed for use with 155 mm launchers and intended to deliver precise, extended-range strikes against targets in contested environments.
The projectile is said to be compatible with both US and Nato 39- and 52-calibre artillery systems without requiring changes to launchers, loaders, propellants, or logistical support.
The munition also features a glide-based aerodynamic design intended to extend artillery engagement ranges by two to three times over standard projectiles, while offering a lower cost per strike than some missile systems with comparable reach.
GA-EMS stated that Vektrex is designed to provide guided and accurate targeting for stationary, moving, and obscured objectives, even in environments where GPS signals are degraded or unavailable.
According to the companies, the partnership allows for shared production activities that could strengthen supply chains, speed up delivery schedules, and increase involvement from defence industries in allied countries.
Koehne said: “European and allied armed forces require long-range strike capabilities that integrate rapidly, scale efficiently, and remain sustainable through resilient multinational industrial networks.
“This MoU enables both companies to align advanced artillery technologies with established manufacturing infrastructure to support evolving operational requirements.”
