American Rheinmetall and General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) have each delivered their XM30 mechanised infantry combat vehicle (MICV) prototypes to the US Army.

The milestone marks a pivotal shift in the multi-billion-dollar race to replace the Army’s legacy M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle.

With both companies’ prototypes now in Army hands, government-led developmental and performance testing has begun.

The evaluations are being executed under a Phase 3/4 detailed design and prototyping framework.

Valued at approximately $1.53bn split equally between the two firms, the current programme phase spans digital engineering, physical prototyping, and comprehensive system validation.

According to American Rheinmetall, its initial Lynx XM30 prototype entered immediate military safety inspections ahead of active field manoeuvres and large-scale combat simulations.

The company plans to deliver seven additional prototypes later this year to support parallel operational unit training.

American Rheinmetall CEO Matt Warnick said: “Delivering our first prototype to the Army is an important step as the XM30 Combat Vehicle program enters a more visible phase.

“Team Lynx now has the opportunity to show the Army that we can deliver on the promise of a modern replacement for the Bradley.”

GDLS has also confirmed its submission of Wolf XM30 prototype, an evolution of its Griffin III.

In a brief press release, the company stated that it delivered the first prototype at Aberdeen Proving Grounds on August 21.

General Dynamics Land Systems US strategy and growth director Geoffrey Norman said: “This on-time delivery will allow Soldiers to start putting the Wolf through its paces, with the ultimate goal of getting it fielded into armoured brigades as quickly as possible.”

Both the prototypes are scheduled to undergo testing phases, using full and open competitive procedures.

American Rheinmetall stated that the Lynx XM30 will first undergo military safety inspections, after which it will move into active field manoeuvres and a training phase ending with large-scale combat simulations.

The Wolf XM30 prototype is also expected for government-led evaluation as part of the same programme.

Both XM30 prototypes integrate new-generation features designed to address emerging threats, including modular construction, adaptive open systems architecture, and digital connectivity for secure, real-time battlefield communications.

American Rheinmetall’s Lynx XM30 introduces a hybrid-electric powertrain and prioritises technology integration and crew survivability, according to the company.

Team Lynx, led by American Rheinmetall, includes Textron Systems, Raytheon, L3Harris Technologies, Allison Transmission, and Anduril Industries alongside a broad US supplier base.

GDLS has not released further details about the prototype, but states on its website that the Wolf XM30 is designed to meet the Army’s performance requirements for modern battlefield operations.

The company is also leveraging its industrial capabilities in Sterling Heights, Michigan.

In a post on LinkedIn, Geoffrey Norman said: “The work continues as this first vehicle gets into the Army’s hands. Every day and night, GDLS is working to complete all our prototypes and deliver on time. That is our commitment and GDLS delivers on its commitments.”

The XM30 programme, formerly known as the Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV), is intended as an optionally crewed platform that can transport soldiers to key positions and operate in crewed or uncrewed modes depending on battlefield requirements.

The XM30 is planned to feature an active protection system capable of countering anti-tank threats with kinetic and passive measures, though it remains unclear whether the vehicle will also have a built-in counter-unmanned aerial system capability.

The Army initiated the competition for the programmes in July 2021, awarding contracts to five companies for the concept design stage.

In 2023, American Rheinmetall and GDLS were selected for the detailed design and prototype phases.

According to Army budget documents, the next stage will involve the procurement of 19 prototype vehicles, with a budget request of $547m.

Final decisions on prime contractors and future acquisition will be based on the performance of both industry teams during testing and evaluation.
