The Artificial Intelligence Warfare Adaptive Swarm Platform (AI-WASP) project, led by Patria, is set to receive nearly €45m ($50m) funding boost from the EU to strengthen the continent’s defence capabilities.
The AI-WASP programme is focused on creating an innovative AI-driven system that combines a multifunctional aperture and transceiver. The end result will be a prototype of two systems designed to be incorporated into small and medium-sized uncrewed aerial vehicles as well as ground-based vehicles or stations.
This project aims to develop capabilities for operations within the electromagnetic spectrum that will be integral to electronic warfare strategies in the future.
The AI-WASP platform will integrate secure communication, radio frequency surveillance, and electronic attack capabilities within a single airborne radio frequency payload.
This convergence is expected to improve Europe’s defence readiness, especially when deployed in diverse operational environments, including extreme Arctic conditions.
Patria strategic programmes executive vice-president Kari Renko said: “We at Patria have extensive experience in signals intelligence, passive surveillance, tactical communication and autonomous technologies. We are excited about the opportunity to lead the joint development of these new converging technologies for use.

By GlobalData“EU-funded R&D programmes prove to be a tangible example of the deepening European defence cooperation.
“Also the success of the Common Armoured Vehicle System (CAVS) and European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems (FAMOUS) vehicle programmes demonstrate that cooperation between European countries and companies in strengthening defence is definitely worthwhile.”
The project has garnered substantial support from several European nations, with Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Italy and also Greece and Spain confirming their participation through a Letter of Intent.
These countries have committed to providing additional national funding.
Patria-led consortium led brings together 16 defence companies from across the continent.
Once operational, the AI-WASP platform is designed for use in crewed and uncrewed autonomous platforms of various sizes.
