The Brazilian Army has awarded a comprehensive industrial logistic support (ILS) contract to Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) to provide technical support for the Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks (MBTs).

Under the contract, the company will provide comprehensive technical support for the MBTs for five years in cooperation with its subsidiary KMW do Brasil in Santa Maria, Brazil.

The Leopard 1A5 is equipped with a main gun thermal sleeve, thermal sights, EMES-18 FCS and stabilisation system to acquire and engage the target, while providing enhanced first-round hit probability.

KMW had delivered 220 Leopard 1A5 main battle tanks, simulators and associated training equipment to the army under a contract signed in December 2008.

The delivery of the tanks and peripheral systems is due to complete in 2011.
