The US Army has awarded a $619m contract to AM General to supply 2,526 high-mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles, or Humvees, to the Afghan Police Force and National Guard, according to the US Defense Department.

The Humvee is a one platform with multiple mission roles truck, used by the US military since 1985.

Humvees are designed for transportation of personnel and light cargo behind the front lines, not as a front line fighting vehicle.

Work will be carried out in Indiana, US, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.

AM General has produced more than 200,000 Humvees for the US Army.
