The Italian Army is to award a €18.8m contract to the defence company Oto Melara for the provision of 64 Hitrole Light remote controlled gun turrets for the army’s light multirole vehicles (LMV).

Under the contract, announced at the Defence Systems & Equipment International 2009 in London, the company will equip the army’s Iveco LMVs with remote-controlled gun turrets with interchangeable 12.7mm and 7.62mm machine guns, as well as a 40mm grenade launcher.

The turrets feature a thermal camera, laser range finder and TV camera supplied by the defence electronics company Selex Galileo.

Deliveries are expected to be complete by early 2011.
