General Sir David Julian Richards will today take charge as the new chief of the general staff for the British Army. General Richards was the overall commander of the international security and assistance force in Southern Afghanistan. The main responsibility to be confronted

General Sir David Julian Richards will today take charge as the new chief of the general staff for the British Army.

General Richards was the overall commander of the international security and assistance force in Southern Afghanistan.

The main responsibility to be confronted by the new commander is the forthcoming strategic defence review to protect the army's share of the defence budget.

The new head of the British Army replaces Sir Richard Dannatt.
