Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace has awarded BAE a US$60m contract to produce thermal imaging modules for its contract with the US Army’s Common Remotely Operated Weapon Station (CROWS) II programme.

The award is the first phase of a five-year contract with a maximum quantity of 6,500 TIM1500 thermal sights for use on CROWS II-equipped vehicles, such as the M1114 High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle HMMWV and Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles.

Uncooled thermal sensors are smaller and use less power than those that must be cryogenically cooled to attain the necessary thermal sensitivity.

Additional contracts add up tp US$200m, depending on demand for Kongsberg’s Protector remote weapon station.
