Switzerland is to sell 12 surplus Leopard 2 battle tanks from the Pz 87 Leo fleet of the Swiss Armed Forces to Canada for conversion into protected special vehicles.

The tanks are part of the various weapon systems that were decommissioned, mothballed, sold or disposed of following the reduction of the Swiss Armed Forces.

The 12 vehicles will be supplied to the Canadian Forces without armament and further components including radio and inter phone systems.

Armasuisse, the competence centre for the procurement of complex systems, is tasked with the performance of the contract and sale of the surplus equipment.

The export of surplus armaments is subject to the War Material Ordinance, and is in compliance with the Federal Council decision regarding the utilisation of surplus war material of the Swiss Armed Forces.

The terms of the sale have not been disclosed by both parties.
