Lockheed Martin and Insta, a Finnish technology firm, are advancing their plans to set up a maintenance and sustainment centre focused on the fire control systems of the M270A2 and HIMARS Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) in Tampere, Finland.

The MLRS common fire control system (CFCS) sustainment centre will be the first of its kind in Europe dedicated to servicing MLRS fire control systems.

Lockheed Martin manufactures the M270A2, a heavy tracked rocket launcher. The planned maintenance capability in Finland is expected to bolster national technical know-how as well as improve the security of supply and lifecycle availability for these artillery systems.

The facility also forms part of the indirect industrial cooperation linked to Finland’s programme to acquire F-35 fighter aircraft.

The new centre is intended to enhance maintenance support for M270A2 and HIMARS systems throughout Europe.

Lockheed Martin stated that the project reflects its ongoing commitment to European defence clients by strengthening the region’s readiness to sustain these weapons systems.

Lockheed Martin Tactical Missiles vice president and general manager Gaylia Campbell said: “Our partnership with Insta creates Europe’s first dedicated CFCS sustainment centre in Finland, expanding M270A2 and HIMARS support across the continent.

“The facility secures the supply chain, speeds logistics and technical services and ensures fire control system availability for Finnish and Nato users.”

Lockheed Martin stated that this facility would support system availability, supply spare parts, and provide technical support with the aim of maintaining operational readiness for customers across the region.

The new capability expands Insta’s European sustainment and lifecycle support operations and reinforces its expertise in supporting complex defence systems across their full lifecycle. It also strengthens cooperation between Finland and other allied nations.

The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2025, concurrent with the roll-out event for the first of Finland’s F-35A fighters.

Insta is also working to establish long-term support for the avionics of Finland’s future F-35 fleet.

Insta Advance CEO Petri Reimn said: “This is an important milestone for Insta and a strong step forward in lifecycle support for critical defence systems. The centre will support the sustainment of Finland’s MLRS fleet, strengthen security of supply, and create readiness to provide sustainment services to other European users.”
